Maldives Correctional Service stamp used on the documents allegedly
authorizing former President Mohamed Nasheed’s prison sentence to be
commuted to house arrest was used on some documents previously,
Nasheed’s lawyers have said.
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, lawyer Hassan Latheef said the same stamp was used on three documents provided before the document which allegedly commuted Nasheed’s sentence to house arrest.
He said forensic analysis was done on these three documents dated 21st June 2015, 21st June 2015 and addressed to Nasheed’s wife Laila Ali and 23rd June 2015 to transfer Nasheed to house arrest for eight weeks.
According to the forensic analysis, the four documents were sent from the same place, Hassan Latheef said. He accused the government of falsely claiming that the document transferring Nasheed to house arrest was forged.
He added that the original copy of the document was handed over to the police at around 09:45 pm on 12th November 2015. He said every minute Nasheed spends in jail will be considered as an arbitrary detention.
