European Parliament has, on Thursday, passed a
resolution calling for the immediate and unconditional release of former
President Mohamed Nasheed.
The resolution was passed with 563 votes in favor, 31 against. There were 32 abstentions.
The resolution also called for the unconditional release of former vice president Ahmed Adeeb, former defence minister Mohamed Nazim and Tholhath Ibrahim, leader of Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran Abdulla and other political prisoners.
The MEP's also called on the EU Commission and member states "to issue comprehensive warnings about the Maldives' human rights record to tourists" planning to visit Maldives, and asked the European External Action Service to monitor closely the human rights and political situation in the Maldives.
