EU Parliamentarians submit resolution calling for targeted sanctions against Maldives

30 Members of the European Parliament has submitted a resolution to the European Parliament calling for targeted sanctions against senior officials of the Maldivian government and financial backers of the regime.

The resolution was proposed to an agenda item of the European Parliament sitting to be held this Thursday (17 December). The agenda item titled as "the situation in the Maldives" will see MEPs debate over the breaches of human rights, democracy the rule of law in Maldives.

The strong resolution proposed by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) calls on the European Union and it's members to impose asset freezes and travel bans against officials of the Maldivian government and key financial backers of the government.

The draft resolution cites several reports published by international organizations regarding rights abuses in the Maldives, including a UN Special Rapporteur's report on the independence of the judiciary and UN Human Rights Commissioner's report on the trial of former President Mohamed Nasheed which cited the trial as having serious flaws.

The draft resolution also cited the opinion of UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention which declared the jail sentence imposed on Nasheed as arbitrary and called for his immediate release.

Other human rights violations highlighted in the draft include threats to opposition MPs, human rights defenders, and journalists.
