Imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed will be permitted to go
abroad for a backbone surgery when he presents doctors documents,
Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has said.
According to the laws and regulations, centers to provide medical facilities for prisoners will not be decided by the prisoners themselves, MCS media official Moosa Rameez said.
He said that prisoners are permitted to go abroad for medical treatment when they present doctors’ recommendation documents and after authorization by the medical board.
“Doctors have so far not provided a document which says that President Nasheed’s operation cannot be carried out in the country. They say the surgery can be carried out here.”
On Monday, Nasheed’s lawyers said he was facing a serious health issue for a backbone injury sustained while in prison.
They said he was beaten up while in prison during the Maumoon regime and also in front of the Criminal Court earlier this year.
Lawyer Hissan Hussein said the backbone surgery can be conducted in two ways; an open discectomy or a micro discectomy.
She said the open discectomy was too risky and the micro discectomy, which is a new technology, cannot be conducted in the country.
