The biggest obstacle to safeguarding the rights
of citizens is President Yaameen, former President Nasheed’s lawyer
Hisaan Hussain has said.
Speaking at RaajjeTV’s ‘Fala Suruhee’ programme, Hisaan said that President Yaameen was deliberately trying to hoodwink the public into believing that foreign countries were critical of Maldives because it does not allow rights contradicting Islam.
Refuting President Yaameen’s claim, Hisaan highlighted that one of the main concerns of the international community currently is the illegal detention of former President Nasheed.
“Countries are asking the Maldivian government to ensure constitutionally guaranteed rights. They are asking President Yaameen to release President Nasheed immediately. How does that contradict Islam?”,Hisaan asked.
Nasheed’s lawyer further insisted that it was very immature of President Yaameen to justify Maldives’ weak human rights record by pointing to rights violations in other countries.
“Two wrongs do not make a right. President Yaameen cannot keep infringing upon our rights just because someone somewhere in the world is being harassed by his or her government”, she said.
Hisaan also accused President Yaameen of influencing the judiciary to further his political interests, and labelled him as a “menace to the country."
