Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that
they will continue to stand up against tyranny, whether it is through
rallies or through prayer.
Speaking at a press conference held by the party on Tuesday, former State Minister at the Islamic Ministry Sheikh Hussein Rasheed Ahmed said that whether it be through rallies or prayer, that MDP is working against tyranny.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs had issued a statement saying that the opposition’s weekly prayer wishes ill on certain individuals and that action will be taken against those who continue to participate in this prayer.
The following Friday after the warning was issued, MDP held its weekly prayer asking to free former President Mohamed Nasheed and to save the country from tyranny.
Ahmed ‘Hassantey’ Hassan, who had led the prayer, was arrested on Monday afternoon and was given a 10 day remand extension on Tuesday.
MDP has condemned Hassan’s arrest emphasizing that he is being detained against the law.
Noting that the “deception is at a new level,” MDP Ungoodaaru member Mohamed Waheed said that is time to stand up against this.
MDP has, since the arrest of Nasheed in February, held a “special dua” for him “asking for the freedom of the former president and to save the country from tyranny.”
After the first dua in which all the parties of opposition alliance participated, Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer had said that, “mosques and its surrounding prayer areas must not be used to make political statements.
