Government of Maldives has said that it rejects
"the suggestion that former President Mohamed Nasheed is a political
prisoner" and “the position promoted by Nasheed’s foreign counsel that
appears to suggest that the Maldives is a center of political repression
and extremism.”
The Ministry had, on Saturday, released a statement following British Prime Minister David Cameron’s call to the Commonwealth urging its members to “send a strong and consistent message to the country about the need for reform and the release of political prisoners.”
Emphasizing that what has been going on in the Maldives is unacceptable, Cameron called on the Commonwealth to “do more to hold countries to account when they fail to live up to their responsibilities as Commonwealth members.”
Cameron made the comments at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in Malta on November 26.
