Home Ministry lies about release of protesters

The Home Ministry has blatantly lied about the release of the thirteen people arrested from yesterday’s ‘Minjuvaan’ protest.

While the statement released by the Home Ministry mentioned the release of all thirteen people arrested yesterday, Maldives Police Service has informed media that none of them have been released so far.
It can also be observed that the English and Dhivehi versions of the Home Ministry’s statement are quite different, as the one in English labels the protests as “violent”, whereas the one in Dhivehi does not.

The Maldivian Democratic Party has said that despite police obstruction it would continue its protest today as well.

During the protest on Friday, the MDP presented three main demands to the Government, including the immediate release of former President Nasheed, former Defence Minister Nazim, withdrawal of politically-motivated charges against 1700 protesters, and facilitation of cross-party dialogue.

Shortly after the MDP presented its demands, the Home Minister tweeted that the government rejects the demands.
