Maldives Police Service has confirmed that 13 individuals have been arrested from the opposition’s “Minjuvaan” rally, including former President Mohamed Nasheed’s 2013 running mate, Dr. Musthafa Lutfi.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, media official at Maldives Police Service confirmed that they have made 13 arrests.

When inquired about how many people from MDP’s leadership were arrested, RaajjeMV was told that the only significant person arrested to their knowledge is Dr. Lutfi. Mohamed Waheed, a member of the party's national congress, was arrested as well.

According to Police, it "started controlling MDP protesters who came on to the streets defying police request to stay at artificial beach for peaceful protest till 00:00hrs."

MDP has said that it will continue its protest for 73 hours and 13 minutes despite the restrictions. MDP emphasized that they had, in their notice, said that they will gather at Artificial Beach before heading out to the streets.

The party notes that authorities had initially agreed to allow them to protest for 73 hours but had later changed their decision after Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer asked "to restrict the protesters to the Beach and end it by 12.”

MDP has accused Umar of being politically motivated and expressed concern over his influence over the Maldives Police Service.

MDP says that they will continue their protest after Isha prayers tonight.
