Serial rallies are being held calling for the release of ousted President Mohamed Nasheed after the United Nations (UN) ruled that the 13-year jail term for terrorism he received was “arbitrary”. Nasheed is serving the prison sentence for the unlawful arrest of the Criminal Court’s chief judge Abdulla Mohamed during the MDP’s short-lived administration.
just as protestors were about to address the rally through loud speakers, police dispersed the gathering and arrested those who failed to comply.
Police also pepper-sprayed the rally which saw protesters again gather in pockets but in different areas.
Though an official of Maldives Police Service (MPS) confirmed the arrests, he did not reveal exactly how many protesters were apprehended.
