President Abdulla Yameen has canceled his scheduled trip to New York to speak at a session at the United Nations.

Previously, the President was scheduled to depart to New York straight from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, after completing the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

RaajjeMV had been unable to get a confirmation of the cancellation as the Spokesperson at the President's Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali had declined to comment on the matter.

According to sources, the President decided to cancel the appearance due to a matter related to the case of former President Mohamed Nasheed, that has been submitted to the United Nation's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

A ruling on the case is expected in October, with lawyers from Nasheed's legal team "confident" that the ruling will be in their favor.

Furthermore, the President and family are to travel to Bangalore, India, after completing this years hajj pilgrimage.

President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim departed to Saudi Arabia on the 18th of September.

The President and wife had traveled to Saudi Arabia in 2014 to take part in the Hajj pilgrimage as well.

Extending Eid ul-Al’haa greetings to the people last year, President Abdulla Yameen said that “Eid ul-Al’haa ‎was an occasion to strengthen unity and solidarity, by cooperating with each other and ‎showing compassion to one another.”‎
