Legal counsel of jailed former
President Mohamed Nasheed has said that Maldives will face sanctions
because of President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and that it cannot be
blamed on President Nasheed.
Speaking on program, Hassan Latheef, local legal counsel for President Nasheed said that Maldives had many obligations under the various international conventions signed by the country. Latheef said that due to violations in these obligations many countries and individuals now viewed Maldives differently.
Latheef noted that due to flagrant violations of minimum fair trial standards during Nasheed's trial, it was very clear to the international community that Maldives is an oppressive state. He also pointed out that during the trial it had become very obvious to the international watchdogs that the government had undue influence over the judiciary and it's decisions.
Latheef said that these violations would lead to sanctions against Maldives. He said that it will start with targeted sanctions towards certain individuals culmination in general sanctions toward the whole country.
