Is a beach really necessary while the basic needs are not met?

The ceiling of the patients ward in IGMH had fallen last month while this month the head of a patients bed frame had broken and fallen due to the device used to change the posture of the bed was broken. And often the hospital faces problems of puddles inside the hospital as a result of leaking roofs.

The main Government Hospital used by people from all over the Maldives becomes a reason citizens continuously complain about. They complain about the low quality of the services the unavailability of satisfactory services. The people who are capable of visiting other places ignore IGMH this is obvious when we study the demand for the private health care in Maldives.

Everyone living in Male’ complains about the uneven roads and the puddles on the road. Inconveniences for the parking due to the high amount of vehicle. And the high population means walking on the roads are also a challenge.

Many people in Male’ are deprived from shelter and people have started living in Villimale and Hulhumale. The problems with the islands are not inexistent either. The ferry’s used to transfer people from Male’ to Villimale not being on time and having slow speed are common complaints.

Youth do not have many opportunities in the over populated Male’. They usually complain about no area for sports however one of the football grounds and part of the youth center have been replaced for the artificial beach. As a result the opportunities for the youth has been reduced. Moreover the hospitals and schools in the area would also be interrupted.

As part of the project to make Male’ a pleasant place does makin a beach have to be a priority? Or does stopping the overpopulation and priority seem more sensible? A beach is already located in the east of Male’. Swimming tracks are already existent and facilities for swimming are already available in Vilimale and Hulhumale. Doesn’t making Hulhumale and Villimale ferry services better and a good quality swimming area seem much more required? This would reduce the population problems for sure.

Even though this is the situation the government has decided that public needs an artificial beach and they are working towards the construction of the beach. The attempts are being made to solve the inconvenience of transportation in Male’ by making one ways in to two ways and the sidewalks are being removed from the road to make them wider. The government is bringing changes as if Male’ is the only island facing these problems. Furthermore how would having an artificial beach benefit the citizens who are deprived from the basic needs? Would that make the citizens happy? Is spending MVR 41.5 million on a beach and the MVR two million on the roads near the beach really necessary? Can it not be used to provide a facility that the people living in Male’ really require?
There is nothing that could be done that is how the government believes it should be. President Yameen is to decide how his government would operate in his five years term. And comments would be made on how the actions are carried out. Some comments would be positive while other comments would be negative depending on the decisions made. Maybe making an artificial beach for the people living in Maafahnu could be the most required thing for the people in Maafahnu in some people’s opinion. However there are things that they need more than this.

For an instance, if providing even 20 percent of the money spent on the beach to provide housing loans many people could build their homes. If the 44 million spent for the beach is provided for loans at the rate of two million per house 22 houses could be built. However, spending the money on the beach instead of these things have become a priority for the government.@Cnm
