Amnesty International has called on the
government of Maldives to hold a transparent investigation into the
attack on the lawyer Mehfooz Saeed.
Saeed, 26, representing jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed, was stabbed in the head at around 5:20 pm on Friday.
Amnesty International had issued a statement regarding the stabbing on Friday, calling for a “transparent” investigation.
Amnesty also urged the relevant authorities to collect all relevant information and evidence regarding the attack, including “CCTV footage”.
Noting the political turmoil in the country, the organization expressed concern over the deterioration of the human rights situation in Maldives in the past two years.
The life threatening attack occurred on Maaveyo Street, near Waadhee Fresh Mart, informed the Police.
Mehfooz was treated at the Emergency Room of the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé City.
After a long delay, the knife that Mehfooz had been stabbed with was removed at around 8:30 pm. The delay was due to the fact that doctors had to determine whether the knife could be removed without causing permanent brain injury.
While one lawyer from Nasheed’s legal team has been attacked, lawyers from Nasheed’s international legal team is to arrive in the Maldives on Monday.
In a statement issued by President Nasheed's office, the office revealed that Ben Emmerson QC, Amal Clooney and Jared Genser had been able to obtain business visas to work in the Maldives. Nasheed's office was informed that the lawyers' visas had been approved by the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Nasheed formed an international legal team, consisting of Genser, Amal Clooney and Ben Emmerson, to represent him on the 7th of April.
This team will represent Nasheed at the appeal submitted to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD), submitted on behalf of Nasheed to declare his imprisonment unlawful and arbitrary.
Nasheed is serving a 13 year sentence imposed on him by the Criminal Court after finding him guilty of terrorism charges over the arrest of the Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed.
Nasheed's fast tracked trial which lasted 19 days was criticized by the
United Nations Human Rights Council as a “hasty and apparently unfair”
trial that made a "mockery of the country's own constitution." Amnesty
International called the trial a "travesty of justice", while the US
Secretary of State John Kerry, during a visit to Sri Lanka said that
Nasheed was “imprisoned without due process.@raajje.mv
