Imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed will be freed before 26th July Independence Day, According to sources, the government made arrangements to free the former President late next week.

Additional details of the matter and official comments were not available.

One of the key demands of the political party talks between opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the government is the release of political prisoners.

MDP representative Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) said the government had ranked the 1,400 names in the list provided by MDP.

Briefing reporters after a meeting on Thursday night, Ibu hinted on the possible release of the former President.

Ibu said the Independence Day will be celebrated in unity. However, he did not reveal decisions to release a certain individual.

“Results will be seen. Like Umar just said, both sides will see result even though we don’t state a certain date for certain accomplishments.”

When questioned on the government’s stand on releasing political prisoners, Umar said the government does not give “commitment” to the matter.

However, he stressed that the government was willing to give in any areas that needed to be resolved.

“The government is always willing to compromise if we believe such a situation has been created. We have made many compromises over the past three weeks. We can see a change in the situation.”

While a meeting between the government and MDP is set to take place on Tuesday, some reports say more development might be on the horizon.
