The new Penal Code which came into effect today brings an end to the injustice caused to the people by the previous Penal Code, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated.
MDP noted in a statement that the implementation of the new Penal Code is a progress for the efforts by the Maldivian people to strengthen the Criminal Justice System.
The old Penal Code in existence since the 1960s comes to an end with years of research for the new Penal Code to maintain the principles of Islamic Sharia, Maldivian tradition and international standards, MDP highlighted.
The main opposition party congratulated the Maldivian people as today marks the historic occasion of the implementation of the new and modernized Penal Code.
MDP also thanked all those who were involved in the process to finalize the new Penal Code along with Professor Paul Robinson of University of Pennsylvania and his technical team for their expertise views and assistance.
