Dismissed Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed says the established independent institutions are forced to fight for their independence as the country celebrates 50 years of independence.
In an audio message sent to the people of the Maldives prior to his impeachment, Jameel said President Yameen’s obligation to strengthen democracy is visible from the current situation of institutions and the media.
He accused the President of jailing political opponents despite his claims to provide freedom to political activism by acting within the boundaries of the constitution and the laws.
He said that the level of observation of the rule of law is clear as undisclosed deals were resolving issues created by abrupt withholding of licenses and freezing of bank accounts.
Jameel who was elected as the Vice President along with President Yameen in the 2013 presidential elections was impeached through a parliament no-confidence vote on Tuesday.@cnm
