Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has begun campaigning against Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb, who has been “campaigning” to become the Vice President.

A parliamentarian representing the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) told RaajjeMV that Maumoon was intent on doing “whatever is necessary” to ensure that Adeeb is not made VP, including speaking to President Abdulla Yameen on the matter.

The former President had previously stated, via twitter, that “he did not have preference for a particular person to become vice president,” and that “as per the Constitution the appointment of a vice president in case the position falls vacant is the sole prerogative of the President.”

He had made the statements after reports had surfaced that he wanted leader of Maldives Development Alliance, Ahmed Siyam to take up the post of VP.

The main reasons Maumoon is opposed to Adeeb’s appointment is because he is fearful that Adeeb would try to take over PPM and also becasue he wants one of his children to compete in the 2018 or 2023 presidential elections.

Noting that Adeeb has been campaigning to be made VP, another PPM member highlighted that this is possibly because Adeeb’s appointment has not been made certain. However he did note that it would be hard for the President to distance himself from the Minister.

PPM has submitted an impeachment motion against current VP Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed which was accepted to the parliament floor. Members of the government have publicly accused the VP of joining the opposition and working against the government. Reportedly, some members are working to submit a resolution against the VP accusing him of working to give the country a bad reputation.

There had been rumors that Maumoon was displeased by the recently passed bill that deems the age limit lowered from 35 to 30 and a limit set at 65 years.
