Speaking to RaajjeMV on condition of anonymity, several MPs from the Ruling Progressive Party said that Madam Laila feared that Minister Adheeb’s growing power could threaten President Yameen himself.
MPs within the government earlier confirmed that former President Maumoon Abdul Qayoom too was unhappy with the decision to appoint Minister Adheeb as VP.
MP Ahmed Mahloof who earlier defected from the ruling party, on Sunday stated that President Maumoon has sent a letter to President Yameen stating he would take back his support for President Yameen if Adheeb is appointed VP.
Though MP Mahloof was a close confidant of President Maumoon, he refuted Mahloof’s claims stating that he did not send such a letter.
Sources who spoke to RaajjeMV said that President Yameen had no choice but to nominate Adheeb as VP against the wishes of his wife and brother.
The source said that Minister Adheeb had the most financial means, and said that he controlled the army, police and the parliament, thus the president is left with no choice but to make Adheeb his second in command.
He said that the vote of no confidence against VP Jameel was not scheduled for today as planned earlier because some MPs within the ruling coalition was on the fence over supporting Adheeb’s nomination. @RaajjeMV
