Parliament Member Eva Abdulla has on Wednesday called on the Parliament to not let Maldives be the trigger to the next Cold War.Referring to the tensions between China and India, and the strategic geographic location of Maldives in the Indian Ocean, MP Eva noted that Maldives is in the front line of the next Cold War.
Urging MPs not to amendment the constitution to allow any foreign body to own land in Maldives, MP Eva said that lets not also make Maldives the trigger for the next Cold War.Reports have surfaced that the overnight amendment to the constitution allowing foreigners to own land in Maldives is part of a larger conspiracy by the government to sell off land to China to build a military base in the Maldives.
Two weeks ago , MP Eva summoned to Defense Minister Moosa Ali Jaleel to inquire about a Chinese Submarine crossing Maldivian waters.
She asked Minister Jaleel whether a Chinese Yuan Class 335 submarine entered Maldivian Waters between the 31st of March and 22nd of May 2015.
She also asks if the Chinese government sought diplomatic clearance or permission for a Chinese submarine to enter Maldivian waters.
MP Eva is also seeking answers to see if the National Defence Force has the capacity to detect the submarine entering Maldivian waters.
Conflicts between the opposition and government have been high over the government’s east-centric foreign policy.
It also adds fuel to the China-India tension in the region as President Yameen’s government builds close relations with China, distancing India further.
India has been worried over China’s growing grip in the Indian Ocean, especially with the Maldives signing on board the Chinese Maritime Silk Route.
The Yuan Class 335 Submarine believed to have docked at Karachi on May 22nd has raised the brows of India as a serious threat to the region.
On May 28, Navy chief Admiral RK Dhowan told reporters in New Delhi that India was "minutely" monitoring Chinese naval activity in the Indian Ocean. He signaled the start of a new great game over the world's most important water body. @raajje.mv
