Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) reveals the issues that the party wishes to emphasize in the negotiations with the government.
Addressing a press conference held at the MDP head office, Member of Parliament for North Maafannu Constituency, Imthiyaz Fahumy (Inthi) said that, they plan to propose five points of discussion to the government. He said that these are issues that the party specifically wishes to discuss.

The first such proposal by the party is that a mediator from India, should be present at the talks held between the government and all main opposition parties; namely MDP, Adhaalath Party and Jumhooree Party. The party’s second proposal is that a solution be found on the issue of political detainees and on challenges faced by councilors.

Inthi also said that they would propose that the system of governance in the country be changed to a parliamentary system of governance with incumbent president Abdulla Yameen continuing as president and a person appointed by the ruling party as Vice President and with no changes brought to the current parliament. Inthi also said that MDP would propose to the government to ensure that independent institutions have the faith of the opposition.

He said that they would also demand that the government distance itself from the Sino-Indian tension and would request the government not to depend on a country like China.

Other issues that MDP plans to bring to the negotiation table include, restoring the powers that were taken from the Supreme Court, reconstituting the Judicial Service Commission, and to ensure that Judges appointed to courts of law hold at least and undergraduate level certification in the field.
