Amnesty delegation visits Nasheed at home
A fact finding mission of Amnesty International currently in Maldives has on Thursday visited former President Mohamed Nasheed while being under house arrest in Male’.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday night confirmed that they had facilitated the Amnesty delegation to visit Nasheed at home, while he is on a two month house arrest for medical reasons amidst a 13 year jail sentence upon him.
While the Foreign Ministry has been quite critical of Amnesty’s earlier findings, the Ministry said it welcomed the mission and stated that it would give full cooperation to the mission.
On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Dunya met with the delegation and stressed the importance for the organization to be fair and objective in assessing the situation of the Maldives.
The Foreign Minister also raised concern on the recent conduct by Amnesty after they released a report of what the government describes as “containing false accusations and misinformation about the human rights situation in the Maldives.”
